March 20, the first day of spring, marked one year since we had to say good-bye to our old boy, Bubba Gump. I snipped some strands of yellow blossoms from the potato vine that is in full bloom, as it was this day a year ago, as he lay dying beneath it. The hum of bumble bees was his funeral dirge. We placed the flowers around his memorial brick in the courtyard at Gracie's Adoption Center at the SSPCA.
Here's what I said to him: Thank you, dear friend, for all the wonderful years you gave us and the good times we shared. We still think of you every day. I miss so many things--feeling you stretched across the foot of the bed warming my feet, your melodious howl, and playing Bagel Toss and The Biscuit Game with you. You are in our hearts forever. We will never forget you. Wait for us at the Bridge, and give our love to Daisy. You were quite the pair.
